Biography
Newton played both basketball and baseball in college. After college he signed a contract to play with the New York Yankees farm team. He stopped playing after the birth of his children. He coached at Transylvania University, University of Alabama and Vanderbilt University. From 1975-1985 he served as chair on the NCAA Rules Committee. In 1989 he was hired as the Athletic Director at his alma mater, University of Kentucky. He is known as a social reformer for integrating basketball by recruiting black players and hiring black coaches. From 1992-1996, Newton served as president of USA Basketball and played a part in the decision made for professional basketball players to represent the United States in the Olympics. From this decision, came the "Dream Team".
